[Jizhi Plastics News] PET manufacturer DAK Americas expects to increase its GDP in Mexico this year, using more PET in carbonated soft drinks to bottled water. This change has been seen for both DAK and other
PET manufacturers, which means that less water per unit of bottled water than soft drink bottles.
According to business director Antonio Garza Rios, demand for PET in Mexico will increase by about 2.5% in 2016, which is in full compliance with Mexico's economic situation. Garza Rios pointed out that Mexico was once a leading country in soft drink consumption per capita until the 2014 soda tax was issued. The country’s consumption of soft drinks fell by 12% in the first year.
Even with the challenge of lightweighting, Garza Rios said DAK's customers are looking at more molds and shapes. He also said: "We have a lot of innovations with our customers, they are always trying to add value, some of these processes have been commercialized, and some are still evolving."
Soft drink suppliers are also trying to use smaller PET bottles, which consumers think are healthier than before.
Antonio Garza Rios said at the 2016 Mexico Plastics and Rubber Show: "Our opponents are lightweight, bottled water is still growing, but not as fast as it used to be, which is determined by consumer preferences.
