China is still a few steps away from becoming a world machine tool powerhouse

There is no doubt that China is now a well-deserved machine tool. After the consumption and import volume ranked first in the world for nine consecutive years, in 2009 and 2010, the output value also became the world's number one, surpassing Germany and Japan. In the eyes of the industry and foreign counterparts, what is the image of the newly emerging Chinese machine tool industry? What are their comments on these firsts?

Has the gap narrowed?

In the survey “Do you think the gap between domestic machine tools and foreign machine tools is increasing or shrinking?”, the proportion of respondents who believe that there are different degrees of reduction is nearly 70%. Among them, 17.5% of respondents believe that “the gap has narrowed down a lot”, and 50% think that “the gap has narrowed down”. This shows that after nearly ten years of efforts, domestic machine tools have indeed narrowed the gap with foreign products, which has been agreed by the industry.

It cannot be ignored that one-third of the respondents believe that China, as a “machine tool powerhouse”, has not narrowed the gap with its advanced foreign counterparts. The 30% of the respondents are subdivided into three levels: 15.6% who think that the “gap is not obvious”, 14.4% think that “the gap has increased a little”, and 2.5% of the “the gap has increased a lot”. . Although there are only a few people who hold similar views in this survey, there are some data support and case demonstrations in some industries and products. In 2010, China's imports of machine tool products totaled US$15.72 billion, a year-on-year increase of 62.0%, and an increase of 27.8% over the highest recorded record in 2008. Since 2000, the trade deficit of import and export of machine tools and tools in China has increased year by year. Reducing the deficit and expanding the market share of national products is an inevitable process for revitalizing the machine tool and even the equipment industry. However, the import of the machine tool industry in 2010 has shown a rebound, which makes us feel the strong market appeal of foreign products.

At the exhibition site, a person working for a foreign CNC system company told reporters that he has been engaged in the sales of CNC systems for many years and his understanding of this segmentation industry. He personally believes that the gap between domestic CNC systems and foreign countries is not narrowing. It is getting bigger and bigger.

What is the effect of national policy support?

What is the gap between domestic machine tools and foreign products?

The survey report shows that the gap between Chinese and foreign machine tools is mainly reflected in three aspects: machining accuracy (25.2%), reliability (18.8%), machine tool internal electricity, gas, control and other configurations (16.5%). The results of this survey are basically consistent with the opinions of industry experts. They repeatedly stressed that the gap between Chinese and foreign products mainly came from the product itself many years ago, and listed these factors, and called on domestic enterprises to improve these parameters of products to win More market share.

In narrowing the gap and catching up with the pace of the world's advanced peers, the state has given considerable support to the machine tool industry during the 11th Five-Year Plan period. Since 2006, the state has begun to pay attention to the equipment manufacturing industry. In 2009, 16 major science and technology projects were launched, and “high-end CNC machine tools and basic manufacturing equipment” were listed among them. The entire special plan investment is 22.1 billion yuan, of which the central government directly invests 10 billion yuan. From the situation in 2009, the total special fund is 7.2 billion yuan and 194 projects are subject. After two years of implementation, the results have been outstanding.

In the survey of major projects of “high-end CNC machine tools and basic manufacturing equipment”, it was considered that “there was a great effect” reached 69.4%. This demonstrates industry acceptance of national support and specialization.

However, for the specific implementation, the respondents put forward a number of recommendations, mainly focusing on the following three items: “The means of acceptance should be more stringent” (38.0%), “the reporting procedure should be more simplified” (29.8%), “the information to be declared should be More open" (28.7%). Some experts pointed out that the development of special projects is actually an investment of the three parties of the state, local governments and enterprises, and the proportion of the state and the localities is even larger. Since it is an investment project, it needs to have corresponding investment benefits. The special acceptance is a process of demonstrating the benefits of investment. The fairness of the results is related to the responsibility of investors, the normal development of the project, and the further development of the industry. Whether the special project has a demonstration effect, how to promote the value, and when the special results are industrialized is the most concerned issue in the industry.

The survey also provides us with a new perspective. In another questionnaire for foreign exhibitors, nearly half (46%) of the foreign companies surveyed believe that China’s relevant support policies will not affect its impact on whether China’s support policies have an impact on foreign companies. Investment and development in the Chinese market. In the past two years, the state has provided great support to the industry, and many companies have also benefited from the implementation of special projects. The answer to foreign investors as international competitors gives us a new perspective to understand and treat these support and offers. Is national support the whole of the industry development, and can the path of industry development be more diversified? If you can think deeply about these issues, you may be able to promote the development of the industry to a greater extent, and at the same time help narrow the gap with advanced foreign counterparts. How do domestic functional components narrow the gap?

In the "high-end CNC machine tools and basic manufacturing equipment" technology major projects, it is clearly proposed to focus on the development of seven CNC systems, 17 functional components and key components. This will be tied to the key categories of the development of the eight major categories of 57 kinds of host products, which shows that the special emphasis on the functional components industry.

In the "12th Five-Year Plan" machine tool industry development plan, a main goal is to promote the industrialization process of CNC systems and functional components.

Wu Bolin, executive vice president of China Machine Tool Industry Association, also admitted that functional components and CNC systems are the two "short boards" of the industrial structure of the machine tool industry. Therefore, the next step in the industry's work is to establish an organic combination of mainframes, CNC systems, and functional components with government support. At this point, some companies have already had some initial attempts. For example, Huazhong CNC and Beijing No. 1 Machine Tool Plant, Dalian Machine Tool Plant, Wuhan Heavy Machine Tool Plant, etc., have invested in CNC system products and established a number of companies.

Compared with the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, China's CNC system has made great progress in its application. At this exhibition, the reporter also saw that many prototypes are equipped with domestic CNC systems. Despite this, some OEMs still said that the domestic system is also good, but the stability still needs to be improved. At the same time, in the list of CNC systems and functional components purchased by some major domestic OEMs, we have seen many Siemens and FANUC. It is understood that Beijing No. 1 Machine Tool Plant imports 230 sets of systems from Fanuc every year and 50 sets of systems from Siemens.

Domestic systems and functional components are not the first choice, and many customers are still on the sidelines of national products, which was also reflected in the questionnaire survey. In the question “If you are a CNC machine tool user or a host manufacturer, whether you are willing to use domestic functional components”, although 44.4% of the respondents indicated that they are willing to use domestic functional components, 50.0% of the respondents only indicated that they can consider adopting .

On the one hand, customers are hesitant about domestic systems and functional components, and on the other hand, foreign counterparts follow the Chinese market at any time. At the exhibition, the reporter saw a domestic grinding machine host equipped with Bosch Rexroth system, which appeared on the booth of Bosch Rexroth. This domestic grinding machine enterprise belongs to the new army that has risen later, and the whole machine has a high cost performance. When the reporter asked why Bosch Rexroth would cooperate with the grinding machine company, the person in charge of the company said that this is an economical CNC system specially developed for the grinding machine in the Chinese market. From this point of view, as Chinese companies strive to increase their market share, foreign companies have not relaxed their expansion of the Chinese market.

China's machine tool industry has three “first” titles of import, consumption and output value, but under this huge aura, where are the most competitive products, how to market the high-end products, how to make functional components and hosts reasonable? Where is the way to support and coordinate development and build a powerful machine tool? Through investigation and comparison, we have seen the gap with international advanced counterparts. Bridging the gap may be a direction for us to look ahead to the future development of the machine tool industry.
