China should speed up the development of PLC standards

Editor's Note: In order to further serve the Chinese market, DS2 of Spain established the “DS2 China Application Center” in Shenzhen and held a conference on power carrier communication standards and technology promotion. At this conference, DS2 Chairman and President JorgeBlasco presented his views on the power line carrier (PLC) market, industry standards and DS2's China strategy.

In recent years, foreign companies have introduced a number of new products in power carrier technology, and have made considerable progress in technology. Although Chinese enterprises have developed rapidly in this field, compared with the globally available power line resources and the developable power carrier application market, China is only in the initial stage of the industry market. In order to further serve the Chinese market, DS2 of Spain established the “DS2 China Application Center” in Shenzhen and held a conference on power carrier communication standards and technology promotion. At this meeting, DS2 Chairman and President JorgeBlasco accepted an interview with the reporter and explained his views on the power line carrier (PLC) market, industry standards and DS2's China strategy.

Chinese PLC market will blowout

Reporter: From the market situation you are in contact with, what is the current progress of the global power line carrier market? What do you think is the difference between the Chinese PLC market and the European PLC market?

JorgeBlasco: Ten years ago, there were no PLC products on the market, but now the global PLC market has reached $150 million. At present, DS2 has sold 2 million to 3 million power carrier chips per year. Our goal is to reach 4 million to 5 million units by 2013. In general, the development of the PLC market in the past 10 years is a blowout process.

The Chinese PLC market started five years later than the European and American markets. Telefonica has started the PLC market four years ago, while BT started the PLC market three years ago, while China Telecom has just started the PLC market. But I believe that within a few years, China Telecom will scale more than any European and American telecommunications company in the field of PLC products.

In the retail market for home network, it used to be the world of Japanese brands, American brands and Taiwanese brands, but I believe that in the future, mainland Chinese brands will also rise in the retail market.

Reporter: What reason are you optimistic about the Chinese market?

JorgeBlasco: I think that Chinese people have a strong ability to accept new technologies. After a few years, China's PLC market will certainly be bigger than the European and American markets. Now in addition to home networking and multimedia, the emerging PLC market is the market for collection systems. I expect that after 3 to 5 years, every electric meter used in China will be equipped with a power carrier chip. However, the growth of the market for collection systems requires a long process, because it takes a long time to transform the electricity meters currently used in China. I personally think that China will start PLC in the retail market of home network and multimedia applications. The overall startup of the collection system will be slower, but once it is started, its scale is quite large.

The G.hn standard also needs to be promoted

Reporter: In China, the lack of mandatory standards is one of the factors that restrict the development of PLC technology and the market. What difficulties do you think are facing the establishment of mandatory standards in this field?

JorgeBlasco: As far as standards are concerned, there must be a global standard in order to make the industry healthy. For example, in the current home network of the communication market, there are five major standards such as coaxial cable, telephone line, wireless, Ethernet, and power line, which makes it difficult to form a unified standard. In the PLC industry, the emergence of the G.hn standard (a unified transmission standard approved by the International Telecommunications Union that covers all home cable networks) will help PLCs form an industry-wide, global standard, but it depends on international The promotion of the ITU (ITU) can be achieved.

As far as the development of the industry is concerned, the establishment of standards is imminent. In terms of two major application areas of PLC, the products of the home network ultimately need to pass the 3C certification, but there is no PLC standard in the 3C certification of China, so many home appliance manufacturers have been unable to develop products in this field. In the field of power meter reading systems, the standard used is the old carrier frequency below 500 kHz, and the actual broadband frequency is above 1 MHz. Of course, China's power grid sector is also stepping up the development of broadband standards for power meter reading systems. I believe that a clear standard will be introduced this year.

Reporter: In the process of formulating and promoting PLC standards, what cooperation does your company have with Chinese companies?

JorgeBlasco: DS2 and China Telecom are now collaborating on G.hn-based products. BT, AT&T, China Telecom and other major telecommunications companies and some chip manufacturers have used the G.hn standard, and their common voice will make the entire industry gradually comply with the G.hn standard. In the market of the collection system, China State Grid Corporation is also a customer of DS2. I think that the internal and external networks of the family will eventually be combined, but this requires telecommunications companies and grid companies to strengthen cooperation and promote together.

Increase technical support and service

Reporter: What is the mission of the DS2 China Application Center established today?

JorgeBlasco: The main task of the DS2 China Application Center (ie Shenzhen Oxite Technology Co., Ltd.) was to provide technical support and services to customers in the past few years. DS2 has a high level of technology in the home network and collection system, but the threshold is too high. Therefore, the first task of the DS2 China Application Center is to lower the cooperation threshold and work with more partners to promote the PLC market. development of. The DS2 China Application Center is equipped with a large number of professional technicians to help and solve customer problems in applications and markets.

Reporter: What kind of market strategy will the DS2 China Application Center adopt for the Chinese market?

JorgeBlasco: At present, China's PLC market is still in its infancy, so we will choose to take the big customer route first. If all technologies are opened at the beginning, it is easy to form vicious competition, which is unfavorable to the development of the industry. At the same time, we will lower the threshold so that more people can participate.

I expect DS2 China Application Center to have a large increase in sales in the next few years, because: First, Chinese traditional manufacturing companies will increase their exports based on the growth of the overseas PLC market. Second, overseas. Some of the large enterprises in the PLC industry will be attracted by China's huge market, and the production base will be transferred to China. Third, the Chinese government will invest 6 billion yuan to 8 billion yuan to upgrade the power meter reading system. . These three aspects will bring great purchasing needs.
