Engineers at MIT developed a miniature fuel cell.
According to foreign media reports, in the near future, people may be able to "utilize the power of the mind." Engineers at MIT have developed a miniature fuel cell that converts the body's natural sugar into electricity.
This type of fuel cell can provide energy for brain implants that treat epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and sputum. Current implant devices are often powered by lithium batteries, which have limited battery life and require periodic replacement. Removing the implant from the body to replace the battery is not an easy task, but it is more difficult to do so in the human brain.
The team that developed this fuel cell was led by Rahul Sarpeshkar, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science. The battery uses a platinum catalyst at one end and a layer of carbon nanotubes at the other end. The fuel cell is placed on a piece of silicon chip that connects it to the electronics used for brain implants.
When glucose passes through one end of the platinum catalyst, it is oxidized, and electrons and hydrogen ions are decomposed in the process, generating an electric current. At the other end of the cell, when oxygen atoms hit single-walled carbon nanotubes, they form water molecules with hydrogen atoms. The fuel cell can generate 180 microwatts of electrical energy, enough to provide enough energy for brain implants that report regions of brain necrosis or that mimic some of the brain's function (a method of treating brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease).
Glucose fuel cells are not new, and their history dates back to the 1970s. In 2010, French scientists developed similar fuel cells to provide energy for pacemakers. The principle of such batteries is: With graphite and enzymes to get electricity from glucose, but the battery life is not long-lasting lithium batteries.
The new type of fuel cell developed by MIT can always produce electricity as long as there is glucose and water. The required glucose can be obtained from the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain, because the glucose here is not used by the human body, and the fuel cell uses only a small part of it, so it does not affect the function of the brain.
At present, this type of fuel cell still passes some simulation tests and has not yet been tested on the human body. Even if it is actually applied to the human body, it will take several years, and its prospect is still worth looking forward to. (Shang Li)
