German startup promotes DC charging technology with efficiency above 99%

According to foreign media reports, students at Bochum University in Bochum, Germany have developed an off-road vehicle that can be charged with a photovoltaic module (PV, a device that converts solar energy into electrical energy). And the car will not drive on the A40 in Ruhr, but in the Simpson Desert in Australia at 45 degrees Celsius.

This SolarBuggy car is equipped with a foldable solar module. Charging this battery requires high-efficiency, small, and lightweight charging technology. Therefore, the charging technology must be able to achieve the best efficiency in the desert with the most extreme conditions, and it must be dust-proof. Even at high temperatures, it can dissipate heat through the casing without the need for a fan.

The students established a technical cooperation with Ambibox, a start-up company close to Mainz near Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Ambibox modified its charge controller and supporting power electronic equipment. Amfrbox General Manager Manfred Przybilla said: "The charging technology used in the SolarBuggy model meets the requirements of future electric vehicles for charging infrastructure: high efficiency, small footprint, high performance, and building on DC voltage."

The SolarBuggy team hopes to cross the Simpson Desert in less than 4 days and 21 hours and set a new record. Due to the extremely hot weather, the solar cells equipped in the car can only provide 3 kW of electricity, instead of 5 kW. Failure to achieve this goal. Moreover, the charging time was extended. When the sandstorm hit, the students gave up the attempt to break the record.

However, Ambibox reached a milestone: the efficiency of DC charging technology exceeded 99%. According to the company, this is the first case in the world.

Using Ambibox's charging technology, you can directly connect various DC devices without bypassing the AC (alternating current) network, and can automatically adjust the energy flow of the device. Ambibox said. Since direct current no longer needs to be converted to alternating current, and vice versa, depending on the application, its charging technology can save up to 20% of energy and save expensive inverters.
