A research team led by Professor Kyoto University’s Nichimoto Xiqing discovered that a magnesium-based battery can be fabricated using a ferro-silicon compound as a battery cathode and an organic solvent containing cesium as an electrolyte. This type of battery has a capacity 1.3 times that of a lithium battery. Its discharge voltage is also 2 volts higher than that of a lithium battery, and it achieves stable charge and discharge. The material cost is only about 10% of a lithium battery.
The research team believes that by improving the electrolyte of this magnesium battery, it can further increase the amount of charge. The team is preparing to conduct further research to reduce the voltage difference between the charging and discharging of magnesium batteries and reduce the energy loss so as to achieve practical application at an early date.
