New breakthroughs in superconducting cable development can reduce transmission losses

Superconducting cable High-temperature superconducting cable using high-temperature superconducting cable has low loss, no insulating oil, no environmental pollution, and flexible use mode, which can reduce power running costs. High-temperature superconducting cables are three to five times higher than conventional cables (at the same cross-section) and can meet the city's growing power needs.

Japanese research team developed a new type of superconducting cable. The cable can deliver 275 kilovolts of high voltage electricity, almost twice that of previous superconducting cables.

According to the news, a research team from the NEDO and Furukawa Electric Industries has issued a statement that it has developed the world's highest level superconducting cable. Use this cable to deliver approximately twice the high voltage of conventional superconducting cables.

The research team said: It is expected that the electricity consumption in emerging countries in Asia will increase. In 2020, the superconducting cable can be used in emerging Asian countries and cities in Japan.

When the cable is cooled at an extremely low temperature, zero-resistance superconductivity will occur, which can greatly reduce the transmission loss. The research team improved the insulated conductors and developed high-voltage power that can deliver about 2 times (275 kV) of conventional superconducting cables. It is estimated that the loss of power transmission using this new type of cable will be less than a quarter of that of ordinary copper cables.
