ON Semiconductor, the premier provider of high-performance silicon solutions for energy-efficient electronics, today introduced the CAT3649, a 6-channel energy-efficient Quad-Mode® LED driver designed for the latest smartphones and other consumer handheld applications such as digital cameras and Portable Media Player (PMP). This Quad-Mode® architecture comes with Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) to ensure market-leading energy efficiency for LED backlighting applications using only external capacitors. The CAT3649 driver combines power efficient, PWM dimming, CABC and filtering with a truly industry-first unique feature. "The energy efficient LED driver CAT3649 offers a total of four charge pump modes (1x, 1.33x, 1.5x and 2x), rather than the conventional 3-mode; making it stand out in the market. The 1.33x increase in CAT3649 drive efficiency is up to 10% more efficient than traditional charge pump LED drivers that use 1.5x the work, enabling hand-held devices with this device to significantly extend battery life. The Quad-Mode® fractional charge pump supports a wide input voltage range from 2.4 V to 5.5 V. The LED driver can adjust the current through a single-wire (1-wire) interface with 32 linear dimming analog dimming, or through PWM. The PWM dimming control is compatible with the CABC function at PWM signal frequencies of 100 Hz to 200 kHz.
