According to foreign media reports, the University of Southampton has launched a new student-led research program aimed at finding ways to improve efficiency and extend the battery life of drones used to monitor remote areas. The project was created by Dr. Patricia Turner, former alumni and technology entrepreneur Dr. Ewan Kirk.
The Turner-Kirk UAV Research Support Program will fund three senior student teams in the university ’s engineering department. The university ’s engineering students developed the world ’s first 3D printed drone in 2011. The task the current student team needs to complete is to find new ways to cheaply adjust existing drones to minimize energy requirements, thereby improving efficiency and battery life per charge.
The results of these student labor will help remotely monitor the impact of climate change in hard-to-reach environments, or track poaching activities and assess natural disasters.
Dr. Kirk said: "In the future, drones will likely continue to monitor global remote and unfavorable environments and feed back real-time data to environmental agencies, so that we can track our global ecosystem in real time. The application of technology is used to mitigate environmental changes. And protecting endangered animals is essential, and universities are a breeding ground for ideas and innovation, and they can play an important role in developing the technology needed. â€
The research team is expected to conduct a field visit to Guatemala with the University of Bristol in 2020 to monitor the active volcano using newly developed technology.
