Japan’s Atomic Energy Research and Development Agency recently announced that its research team has developed a technology for efficiently extracting lithium from seawater, which may help Japan, which lacks lithium resources, to obtain lithium from seawater at a lower cost in the future.
Lithium is a rare metal. As a raw material for lithium batteries, it is widely used in personal computers and electric cars, and lithium used in Japan is completely dependent on imports. Lithium in the world's land is limited, and it is estimated that it is only about 14 million tons, but there is abundant lithium in seawater, which is estimated to reach 230 billion tons, but it is difficult to extract due to its low concentration. Existing countries have extracted lithium by evaporation of salt lake water containing lithium.
The team used new technology to create a device for extracting lithium from sea water. The device is a cube with a length of about 7 centimeters on each side. The inside is divided into two parts by a special membrane that can only pass lithium ions, and part of it is used to release seawater. The other part is added with hydrochloric acid. When the upper electrode is installed in each of the two parts, and the wire is connected, when the current passes through the wire, lithium in the seawater passes through the membrane and moves to the other part of the hydrochloric acid.
After lithium is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, sodium carbonate can be easily precipitated, so the final separation is easier.
According to reports, using this device for experiments, about 1.8 milligrams of lithium can be extracted from about 25 liters of seawater after 30 days, and the extraction rate is more than 50%.
The Japan Atomic Energy Research and Development Agency believes that the use of this technology will hopefully obtain abundant lithium in seawater at a very low cost.
