US University develops "freezing" lithium battery life extension security upgrade

According to the British "Daily Mail" reported on April 24, American researchers have developed a new freezing method that can extend the life of lithium batteries, improve safety, and the battery can bend. This technology has the potential to be applied to smartphones and tablets to make them more flexible.
The liquid electrolyte in most rechargeable lithium batteries on the market is highly flammable and can cause safety hazards, such as the explosion scandal before the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Therefore, researchers at the University of Columbia's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences decided to replace the liquid electrolyte with a solid electrolyte and use an ice template to fabricate a vertically aligned column structure of the ceramic solid electrolyte. Ceramic solid electrolytes have higher safety and electrical conductivity.
The researchers said that this is the first time that a non-flammable and non-toxic flexible solid electrolyte has been used in lithium batteries using the ice stencil method. In the future, a smart phone or tablet using the battery can be bent.
