Alvord-Polk develops laser cladding technology

Alvord-Polk has recently developed a new technology that uses a laser to fuse a layer of HSS superalloy powder on the cutting edge of a high speed steel tool. This is a laser cladding process called "Laserclad". It is said that the tool edge after the Laserclad treatment has the high hardness of the HSS super alloy, so the tool durability is significantly improved.
This coating process was done on a five-axis CNC laser coater. The machine is equipped with a 1.5kW laser and an observation system. It used to be used to repair steam turbine blades and is now used directly to coat the tool's land. The upper part of the coating machine has a vibrating hopper, and the inner HSS superalloy powder is sent to the cutting edge through the thin tube by argon gas pressure, and the laser beam melting powder forms a metallurgical bond with a hardness of HRC70 with the local blade. The work was initially studied by the University of Pennsylvania laboratory, which provided lasers and controllers, as well as initial analysis, and Alvord-Polk tested the process directly on the reamer edge. The company is also preparing to coat Rex121 superalloys on the edge of the M-1 high speed steel reamer.
