"Dye-sensitized" photovoltaic cells that can also generate electricity in dark interiors.
According to the report of Japan’s “Economic News†on the 9th, the Japan International Institute of Advanced Technology has recently developed a photovoltaic cell that can generate electricity in a dark environment.
The battery can generate electricity by means of infrared light that cannot be seen by human eyes, and light a light-emitting diode (LED) lamp that consumes less power. The Institute plans to seek practical application of this technology for emergency lighting lamps that do not use power.
Professor Waseda Tetsuya and others from Waseda University provided assistance. The surface of the electrode is affixed with crystal particles to form a thin-film photovoltaic cell. The crystal can absorb infrared light that is invisible to the naked eye and is then transmitted to the dye and converted into electrical energy. This kind of electricity is called "dye sensitized" photovoltaic cells.
The research team prototyped a 7 cm square photovoltaic cell and lit the small LED light even in the environment where the human eye felt a dark 14 lux (lux units). If the ambient brightness is 200 lux, the conversion efficiency will be more than 18%.
