Recently, the State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Ultramicrostructure of the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences has made new advances in photoelectrochemical cells.
Semiconductor Liquid Junction Solar Cells Based on Cu/Cu2O and Their Properties
Shao Fang, a doctoral student of the research group, under the guidance of his researcher, Sun Jing, explored and prepared a semiconductor liquid junction solar cell based on Cu/Cu2O. The battery has the advantages of abundant raw materials, low cost, simple preparation method and easy control at low temperature, and the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency can reach 3.13%. Using ITO-PEN conductive plastic instead of FTO, a flexible solar cell can be obtained with an efficiency of 1.44%. The results of this study were published in the International Journal Advanced Functional Materials (22(18), 3907-3913, 2012).
Cu2O is non-toxic and cheap, and has good catalytic performance under visible light. It is a kind of solar semiconductor material with great application potential. However, at present, the efficiency of Cu2O-based solar cells is still relatively low. In particular, Cu2O made by electrochemical deposition methods has a relatively high resistance and seriously affects the performance of Cu2O-based solar cells. The Cu/Cu2O based liquid junction solar cells can effectively improve this problem. The Cu/Cu2O resistance of the core-shell structure is smaller, and the Schottky junction is formed by Cu and Cu2O contact. This not only facilitates the separation and transport of charges, but also suppresses the recombination of charges, and ultimately improves the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the battery.
